Enable SMS marketing opt-in in Shopify (so phone numbers sync)
What this enables
When SMS marketing opt-in is enabled in Shopify checkout, customers can:
- Enter a phone number during checkout
- Explicitly consent to receive SMS marketing
This consent status and phone number can then be used by your messaging workflows and any contact syncing that relies on Shopify’s SMS subscription status.
Turn on SMS marketing opt-in in Shopify
From your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Checkout.
Scroll to the area related to Marketing options / Customer marketing / Consent (the wording can vary slightly by Shopify version).
Turn on the option that shows an SMS marketing opt-in (a checkbox or consent prompt) during checkout.
If you see separate options for email and SMS, make sure SMS is enabled.
Confirm your checkout is set up to collect a phone number so customers can complete SMS consent. If Shopify provides a setting to require or collect phone numbers at checkout, enable it.
Click Save, then run a test checkout (or use Shopify’s checkout preview) to confirm you can:
- Enter a phone number
- See an SMS opt-in prompt
- Submit the order with SMS opt-in selected
