Where to see SMS subscribers and consent status in Shopify

What you can confirm in Shopify

Shopify tracks marketing consent separately for email and SMS. You can use this to confirm who has opted in before you message them.

  • Email subscription status: whether a customer is subscribed to email marketing.
  • SMS subscription status: whether a customer is subscribed to SMS marketing (when a phone number is present).
Exact field names and filter options can vary slightly by Shopify admin version and installed apps, but the workflow below (Customers list → filters → open a customer) is consistent.

Filter customers by email and/or SMS status

In your Shopify admin, go to Customers.

Use the filter bar (often labeled Add filter or a funnel icon) to add a marketing-related filter.

Look for filters such as:

  • Email subscription status (for example: Subscribed, Not subscribed)
  • SMS subscription status (for example: Subscribed, Not subscribed)
  • Accepts marketing (email-related in many Shopify views)

Add one or more filters to narrow the list:

  • Email only: set Email subscription status to Subscribed.
  • SMS only: set SMS subscription status to Subscribed.
  • Both channels: set Email subscription status to Subscribed and SMS subscription status to Subscribed.
If you don’t see many SMS subscribers, add an additional filter like Phone / Has phone number (if available) to avoid empty results from customers without a phone number.

If you’ll reuse this view, save it as a segment in Shopify (if your store has segments enabled). Name it something clear, like SMS subscribed or Email + SMS subscribed.

Confirm consent on an individual customer

From the filtered list, click a customer to open their profile.

In the customer details, locate the sections for Email marketing and SMS marketing (wording can vary). Confirm the status shown for each channel.

  • For email, you should see an email address and a subscription/consent status.
  • For SMS, you should see a phone number (if present) and an SMS subscription/consent status.
If a customer has an email address but no phone number, Shopify can still show an email subscription status, but there may be no SMS status to confirm.

Export a list of opted-in customers (for auditing)

If you need a record of who is subscribed, you can export from the Customers list after filtering/segmenting.

Use the same filters/segment you use to identify subscribed customers.

Click Export in the Customers area, then choose the option that exports the current search/segment (wording varies).

In the exported file, look for fields/columns related to email and SMS marketing status. Use these to document who is subscribed on each channel.

Understanding common statuses (quick reference)

This usually means the customer consented to email marketing but either:

  • didn’t provide a phone number, or
  • didn’t opt in to SMS marketing.

Use SMS subscription status = Subscribed to find SMS-consented customers specifically.

A phone number on a customer profile does not automatically mean SMS marketing consent. Always check SMS subscription status (or the SMS marketing section on the customer profile) to confirm.

Shopify admin menus and filters can vary by store configuration and rollout. If you don’t see an SMS-specific filter, you can still confirm SMS subscription on individual customer profiles, and you may be able to use segments or exports to identify SMS status depending on your Shopify version.

Use these Shopify statuses as your source of truth for marketing consent. A phone number or an order alone is not the same as SMS marketing opt-in.
